I am a hazard to my own health
May. 14th, 2006 10:57 pmThere are a lot of foods that you heat up by submerging a packet in boiling water. It's more common in Japan than in the states, but my favorite brand of chili is packaged like that. (Zippy's chili. If you've ever lived in Hawaii, you should know what I'm talking about.) As this method doesn't let moisture escape, it's much better than the microwave for certain types of food items.
Anyway, I was preparing to heat up a hamburger. The dorm kitchens have a hot water heater, ostensibly for tea, though it doesn't quite get things as hot as I'd like it. I still use it for when I have to boil water, simply because it saves a bit of time.
So it means that the water I spilt on my hand wasn't boiling but it was still pretty hot. At first I said that I was okay, but then I noticed that my skin was peeling. A lot.
(It turned out that my skin wasn't peeling, but it got really loose and wrinkled to the point that it looked like it was. It really hurt.)
I started with a popsicle, but ended up resorting to the traditional (not really) Japanese practice of using frozen foods in the place of ice packs. In this case, frozen strawberries.
