Nov. 21st, 2007 12:07 amHandy Kitchen Hint: In the absence of a microplane, the most useful kitchen tool for zesting citrus fruit is an oroshi grater. (It's even better than the smallest grater that we had, which was rather small, but made for a mandoline. The oroshi grater was also a mandoline attachment, which is why we had one in the house.)
Corollary: Cleaning the remaining zest out of the oroshi grater is very difficult and highly unpleasant.

Date: 2007-11-21 06:19 am (UTC)I came home and there was this horrible mangled orange sitting next to the kitchen sink, and I was like 'Jan wtf happened to this orange?' and she was like 'Oh! I zested it!' and I was like '....with what?' 'A knife! :D' '...and how did that work out?' 'Not bad, actually!' '...maybe for the zest but this poor orange is going to need therapy.'
