Handy Kitchen Hint: In the absence of a microplane, the most useful kitchen tool for zesting citrus fruit is an oroshi grater. (It's even better than the smallest grater that we had, which was rather small, but made for a mandoline. The oroshi grater was also a mandoline attachment, which is why we had one in the house.)

Corollary: Cleaning the remaining zest out of the oroshi grater is very difficult and highly unpleasant.
