rhyme: (there you are)
[personal profile] rhyme
Today we actually made it to Kinkakuji. On the way, I discovered the joys of riding a bicycle while wearing a skirt.

Actually, it just boils down to being able to put of laundry another day. But a skirt seemed like a good idea because one of the other girls had decided to try it. Her's was a bit longer than mine, though she reported the same problems. Namely wind and trying to sit on a bicycle seat in a skirt. There are several high schools nearby, and the female students never seem to have any trouble, but when you try it yourself, you find that it is rather awkward. Luckily, my skirt had two layers! ^____^

To coordinate with the skirt, I wore a hat and my brand new dress shoes-my sneakers wouldn't match at all. They are very nice shoes, kind of like platform loafers, which are very cute. Kikakuji is a temple with a lot of gravel! Guess what happened to my nice new shoes.

Today was the day of our dorm "Get-to-know-you" party. I decided that it would be a good idea to fry some gyoza and french fries. Frozen gyoza and french fries, which still had a bit of ice on them, which resulted in one of the most terrifying...okay, not really scary so much as uncomfortable, especially when the take out containers I was using to hold the food in started melting. All the while, I had people wandering in and out of the rather cramped kitchen. The gyoza turned out okay, at least once I realized that I had the heat too high, the gyoza dry a little if you microwave them first, and that if you let the oil cool before trying to pour it into a pet bottle, things turn out better. The fries, however, were a lost cause.

At the party, I had my first legal alcoholic beverage- this lychee flavored alcohol thing. It tasted horrible. I also had a sip of rum and a sip of sake. They told me that the sake was sweet, but it had an awful aftertaste.

I don't think I got drunk, but a bunch of the others did. There were cameras. I somehow got roped into a picture involving a cheerleader chair lift. They were laughing a lot, so it must have been funny. Everyone else was just looking at us funny and I worry about the stereotype that Americans can't hold their alcohol. I ended up skipping out an hour early. (That was a few hours ago and I'm still fine, but standing up at the time was annoying, because I had been standing up for a really long time before that.)

It turns out that I had made to much food, but I think at least 5/8ths of it was consumed at the time I left.

It's kind of hard when I have to fill out nametags here. I've been telling people that they can address my by my middle name - mostly because the way most people pronounce my first name doesn't really register in my head. I really don't care which one they use, because I answer to both. "Hey you" also works, as long as I'm given some time to work out that "you" equals me.
