Tonight, my father suddenly says that my brother isn't home yet. It's past midnight- he got off of work at the same time that I did, and said that he was going to hang out at Safeway before he walked home.

And then my brother said that the ridge was on fire.

I asked where. He told me that if I went into the yard, I'd either see it or be blind.

And so I went, and at first couldn't see anything. Then I stepped out- it was raining, I discovered, but a light rain that was difficult to see in the dark- and saw flames on the hill.

I stood in the road before running back in because the ridge was on fire. It's not very distant.

My camera was out of batteries, so I grabbed my brother. And then we decided that it was impossible to see very much at all from our yard, so he said he'd go back to the elementary school.

I wanted to go too, so I grabbed a pair of jeans and an umbrella and we went, briskly down the sidewalks, racing accross the street.

It was kind of surreal, running down the hallway late at night. It was the sort of thing that wouldn't be allowed during the day. And then we came out from under the cover and you could see how the fire spread out in a ring, flaring at the edges on the mountainside. I could see smaller lights, but it was difficult to tell whether they were lights from houses or just embers. I don't think there were any houses on that specific part, though there were on the other side.

We took pictures. They were blurry.

But there's not much to say about a fire like that, beyond the fact that it was burning. So I found myself looking around the school. They tore down parts of the playground, added walkways and benches. I miss the old equipment. So it was probably only about 15 minutes before we left, though it felt like longer.

On the way back, we stopped, because one of the fire departments helicopters landed in the yard.

It was just kind of weird.

Brush fire may or may not be still burning- complicated by the fact that area is difficult to access.

Did my kid brother lose my cellphone charm when he borrowed it?

If so, I'm not going to be very pleased. I had wanted one like that for years and it was a bit of a pain finding it. Not to mention that you can't buy them here. >(
